A new waterborne polyurethane coating combines polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and disulfide bonds for superior antifouling and self-healing abilities, providing promising industrial applications for smart coatings.

A recent study published in the Journal of Coatings Technology and Research by Haoran Wei and his team introduces a novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU) coating that exhibits both excellent antifouling and self-healing properties. The coating integrates polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and dynamic disulfide bonds, making it particularly valuable for industrial applications in challenging environments.
The researchers examined the impact of PDMS and disulfide content on the coating’s thermal, mechanical, and surface properties. Thanks to its structural design, the coating demonstrated strong resistance to fouling and enabled self-healing at temperatures above 60°C, restoring mechanical properties up to 95%.
Surface Property Optimization
PDMS contributes to low surface energy, enhancing the coating’s antifouling qualities by preventing foreign substances from adhering. Self-healing is achieved through dynamic disulfide bonds that activate with heat, closing coating damage. This research paves the way for multifunctional smart coatings with diverse industrial applications.
